WHAT IS ROSH HASHANAH

The anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve, a day of judgment and coronation, the sounding of the shofar . . .

"Jewish tradition believes that Adam was created on this day (Mishnah, San Hedrin 38b).

How did they decide that this was the day of the year the world was created? Because the first words of the Book of Genesis (Bereishit), "in the beginning," when changed around, read, Aleph b'Tishrei, or "on the first of Tishrei."

The festival of Rosh Hashanah—the name means “Head of the Year”—is observed for two days beginning on 1 Tishrei, the first day of the Jewish year. It is the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve, the first man and woman, and their first actions toward the realization of mankind’s role in G‑d’s world.

Rosh Hashanah thus emphasizes the special relationship between G‑d and humanity: our dependence upon G‑d as our creator and sustainer, and G‑d’s dependence upon us as the ones who make His presence known and felt in His world.

The central observance of Rosh Hashanah is the sounding of the shofar, the ram’s horn, which also represents the trumpet blast of a people’s coronation of their king.

Additional Rosh Hashanah observances include:

a) Eating a piece of apple dipped in honey, to symbolize our desire for a sweet year, and other special foods symbolic of the new year’s blessings.

b) Blessing one another with the words “Leshanah tovah tikateiv veteichateim,” “May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year.”

c) Tashlich, a special prayer said near a body of water (an ocean, river, pond, etc.), in evocation of the verse, “And You shall cast their sins into the depths of the sea.” And as with every major Jewish holiday, after candle lighting and prayers we recite kiddush and make a blessing on the challah.

Vayikra (Lev) 23:23-24 remember.

They appointed the L'vi'im aged twenty and up to direct work in the house of YEHOVAH.

Ezr 3:9  Yeshua and his sons and brothers, Kadmi'el and his sons, and Y'hudah's sons together directed the workers in the house of God; also the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their kinsmen the L'vi'im.

Ezr 3:11  They sang antiphonally, praising and giving "thanks to YEHOVAH, for he is good, for his grace continues forever" toward Isra'el. All the people raised a great shout of praise to YEHOVAH, because the foundation of the house of YEHOVAH had been laid.

Ezr 3:12  But many of the cohanim, L'vi'im and heads of fathers' clans, the old men who had seen the first house standing on its foundation, wept out loud when they saw this house; while others shouted out loud for joy –

Ezr 3:13  so that the people couldn't distinguish the noise of the joyful shouting from the noise of the people's weeping; for the people were shouting so loudly that the noise could be heard at a great distance.

Psa 27:1  [By David:] YEHOVAH is my light and salvation; whom do I need to fear? YEHOVAH is the stronghold of my life; of whom should I be afraid?

Psa 27:2  When evildoers assailed me to devour my flesh, my adversaries and foes, they stumbled and fell.

Psa 27:3  If an army encamps against me, my heart will not fear; if war breaks out against me, even then I will keep trusting.

Psa 27:4  Just one thing have I asked of YEHOVAH; only this will I seek: to live in the house of YEHOVAH all the days of my life, to see the beauty of YEHOVAH and visit in his temple.

Psa 27:5  For he will conceal me in his shelter on the day of trouble, he will hide me in the folds of his tent, he will set me high on a rock.
