Marriage is...Responsibility & Servanthood Part 4

Humility and obedience is a straightforward requirement of the servant of Adonai. It is essential that the husband demonstrate obedience to all that the Word prescribes for him. The well-being of his wife and family depend upon it.

"But My servant Caleb, because he has had a different spirit and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land which he entered, and his descendants shall take possession of it.

Numbers 14:24

And Eli said to Samuel, "Go lie down, and it shall be if He calls you, that you shall say, 'Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

1 Samuel 3:9

Great difficulties arise when the man is placed to serve another whose position is not much higher than his own. This “servant of servants” role is rare, but occurs after repeated or egregious dishonor or rebellion.

So he said, "Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants ^.He shall be to his brothers.

Genesis 9:25

"Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Yeshua. But the greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

Matthew 23:10-12

There are many scriptures that confirm the message of the servant. Repeatedly the Word reminds us that both the man and the woman and even the powerful angels are all mere servants before Adonai. For this reason it is wrong to exalt oneself above another. It is wrong to lord power over another

But they kept silent, for on the way they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest. Sitting down, He called the twelve and *said to them, "If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all."  Taking a child, He set him before them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them,   "Whoever receives one child like this in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me does not receive Me, but Him who sent Me."

Mark 9:34-37

 But he *said to me, "Do not do that. I am a fellow servant of yours and of your brethren the prophets and of those who heed the words of this book. Worship God." And he *said to me, "Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near.

Revelation 22:9

In marriage, the role of the wife is powerful, foundational

and life-sustaining.

The role of the maidservant is clearly as a support to the husband, the household, and a foundation of strength to the community as well. Scripture is filled with examples of Godly wives who clearly embraced their role with humility, love and zeal. Through their actions, their husbands were given honor, sons, and blessings from Adonai.

PENNINAH versus HANNAH

This account is of particular interest because both Hannah and Elkanah fulfilled their roles as wife and husband with extraordinary obedience, humility, and love.  They probably could not have foreseen the extraordinary legacy they would leave through their son, Samuel.  However, we continue to be blessed by his incredible ministry to this day.

Now there was a certain man from Ramathaim-zophim from the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. He had two wives: the name of one was Hannah and the name of the other Peninnah; and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. Now this man would go up from his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the LORD there. When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and her daughters; but to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, but the LORD had closed her womb. Her rival, however, would provoke her bitterly to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. It happened year after year, as often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she would provoke her; so she wept and would not eat. Then Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep and why do you not eat and why is your heart sad? Am I not better to you than ten sons?" Then Hannah rose after eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. She, greatly distressed, prayed to the LORD and wept bitterly. She made a vow and said, "O LORD of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and a razor shall never come on his head."  Now it came about, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli was watching her mouth. As for Hannah, she was speaking in her heart, only her lips were moving, but her voice was not heard. So Eli thought she was drunk.  Then Eli said to her, "How long will you make yourself drunk? Put away your wine from you." But Hannah replied, "No, my lord, I am a woman oppressed in spirit; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the LORD."Do not consider your maidservant as a worthless woman, for I have spoken until now out of my great concern and provocation." Then Eli answered and said, "Go in peace; and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of Him." She said, "Let your maidservant find favor in your sight." So the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad. Then they arose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD, and returned again to their house in Ramah. And Elkanah had relations with Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her.  it came about in due time, after Hannah had conceived, that she gave birth to a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, "Because I have asked him of the LORD."

The idea of a “servant” is regarded as a negative, unfavorable position in most countries around the world today. But the ancient Biblical people understood powerful truths about servanthood.
• They understood that all humans must work and serve…even “free” men served God.

• They also understood that “freedom” and “privilege” also came with great responsibilities…even ADDED responsibilities…. in addition to the work that the servants needed to worry about.

• Women: Discuss the account of Avigayil /Abigail (1 Samuel 25) according to her understanding of her role as servant. Discuss her thinking, her actions and the results of her behavior.

• Men: Discuss the account of the patriarch, Yakov (Genesis 28)according to his understanding of his role as servant. Discuss his thinking, his actions, and the results of his actions
